A distanza di un anno dalla precedente joint-venture i londinesi di Footpatrol tornano a collaborare con Le Coq Sportif per una nuova edizione di uno dei più grandi classici running del brand francese, la Eclat. Niente ispirazioni retro questa volta ma un mix di materiali e colori che richiamano i popolari dolcetti francesi, con una tomaia in pigskin suede dai dettagli traforati accostata alla tradizionale intersuola bianca con suola “gum”. Uscita programmata per il prossimo 1 Giugno da Footpatrol e tra selezionati rivenditori Le Coq.

After the release of our first collaboration with le coq sportif collaboration in 2012, we were honoured when asked to work together again – we would like to introduce the Footpatrol x le coq sportif Éclat “Macaron Edition”

Our previous collaboration was designed with the intention of being an “easy-to-wear” silhouette using materials comparable to the original 80′s runner. Our second collaboration pays tribute to France’s most famous confectionary creation the Macaron. Known for its’ intricate presentation and elegance, we wanted to take the same approach with our design by creating a “luxury edition”of the Éclat.

Like the Macaron “crisp on the outside and smooth in the middle” our Éclat features a pig-skin suede upper, super soft satin lining with hints of metallic gold running throughout. Inspiration for the colourway was taken from the flamboyant colour palettes of the Macaron, we then mixed in a pinch of 3M before adding the final gum outsole ingredient… and voilà!

La recente collaborazione tra i newyorkesi di ISAORA e il visionario Thomas Meyerhoffer, per quanto poco abbordabile e poco pubblicizzata, è stata a nostro avviso una delle più interessanti joint-venture dell’ultimo periodo. Un po’ perchè è tanto distante quanto coerente con il DNA di ISAORA, un po’ perchè ha messo in luce il fine lavoro di Meyerhoffer anche in ambiti non propriamente affini al suo “core”, ovvero il design e il surf. Il team di HYPEBEAST ha da appena messo online una selezione di pezzi nati dalla collaborazione (praticamente tutto tranne le tavole) e per l’occasione ha fatto due parole con creativo californiano per approfondire una minima il suo modo di vedere le cose. Sotto un breve estratto, qui il resto.

When did you realize that the surfboard was a design medium that you wanted to commit yourself to evolving?

When I surfed the first boards I ever made. In the beginning, the boards were more like sculptural art pieces, but after taking them out I realized that they functioned incredibly well, too. The hardest part was the next step, which involved consciously deciding on design choices. Ultimately, I went with my gut in regards to what I felt might work best on the waves. A few millimeters of surface discrepancy can spell the whole difference between a good and great board. Last year, I made over 40 prototype boards. Every time I go out, I surf a different board to keep my mind fresh.

How do you differentiate between upgrading/progressing an existing surfboard in your collection and knowing that it’s time to develop a completely new one?

I don’t. It’s all one single process for me. I always keep forward momentum in mind when it comes to design. A new board is ready when it has its own soul. Whenever I release a new board, what you see, feel, and ultimately surf is a direct result of that spirit of progress. The current lineup is comprised of boards that are all highly evolved to perform optimally in the water. I consider them finished, for now.

Many people identify the SLIP IN as your most radical surfboard design. Could you please discuss the process that inspired and created that board, as well as what went into naming it?

Actually it shares DNA with this one longboard that has the same tail and that negative cut. I was in Barbados with my friend Zed, a great surfer who runs our test center out there. He suggested I should do a shorter version of the longboard. When I went back home I created a few prototypes and brought them out to the Maldives a month later. We rode them in head-high waves and they worked beautifully straight out of the box – it slips into any wave. It’s a single fin and trims like one, but it turns more like a thruster with the negative cut in the tail. You can adjust how radical you want to be by moving your back foot. We won best in show at Boardroom last October and have seen a lot of orders come through since.
